I'm not an expert or anything, but...
Niacin and Niacinamide were/are both used in Orthomolecular treatment for schizophrenia. Niacinamide is apparently better tolerated (no flushing, fewer probs with elevated liver enzymes, etc.), and is used by Orthomolecular docs for schizophrenia and anxiety disorders.
Niacin lowers cholesterol; niacinamide does not.Dosages can vary wildly. For Niacinamide, treatment of psychosis usually requires 3 grams at least; anxiety, several hundred mgs to several grams...some protocols call for matching amounts of vitamin c plus other stuff (5-htp, for instance).
Personally, I take 3-5grams daily, 1gram @ a time. It helps a good bit; I do sometimes get sedated, and my friends sometimes notice that I sound "drugged" immediately after a dose, but these effects are pretty mild. All in all, I'd say for me niacinamide is a lot like a benzo, only the improvement has been less sudden and the sedation has been less pronounced (and I haven't really noticed any disinhibition, which is nice).
Nausea can be a problem, though, so do watch out for that.
Good luck!
