Hi Maxime -

Thiamin is quite a calming B vitamin for me, and it is usually deficient in people with eating disorders (also alcoholics and people eating a lot of refined carbs or sugar) - which might explain why it is helpful. In fact, I couldn't put my finger on WHY - I just feel better and less like binging when I take it (or obsessing about food). It might be it's effect on mood, anxiety and also blood sugar regulation.

Interestingly I notice better effects if I take 25mg of a B complex and then 25mg of extra B1 at a different time. It is possible I don't absorb the B1 from the B complex as well as when I take it alone.

There have been claims that a thiamin deficiency is at the root of eating disorders - but I'm not sure of what if any studies have been done to prove this.

Now I know most people would not recommend taking calcium with magnesium - but I personally do take a chelated multimineral supplement in addition to extra magnesium and zinc (all chelated). I like the combination that calcium with magnesium has on my sleep. I end up taking about 1:1 Ca:Mg, but I really try to take my daytime magnesium at a different time to any calcium, and also between meals. I like to take extra zinc, but have felt better since adding back in a little copper to balance things out (in the multi) - I was dealing with irregular heart beat until I did this. However I have been supplementing zinc for quite a few years, and if you have high copper levels (which can be bad for eating disorders) you may just wish to carry on with zinc alone. Probably best to get your minerals tested anyway to find out.

Recently I have been trying Kal's magnesium orotate and really like the stuff. It seems to be calming for me without getting diarrhea. I also like Nature's Plus Dyno-Mins magnesium with potassium, which is chelated to plant acids and seems very well absorbed. Diarrhea is a problem for me for taking large doses of other types of magnesium, even Mg glycinate, but I most certainly need quite a lot of magnesium to feel relaxed.

Do you take a multivitamin in addition to the Zn, Se, B1 and Mg?? Those things will help, but it is possible to get out of balance with other vits/minerals if you don't take a basic multi.

Good luck!
