I started GLA a few months ago because I saw some anecdotal reports that when the serotonin/norepinephrine/dopamine strategy didn't work for depression or anxiety GLA sometimes did in a miraculous way. In those cases, the psychiatric conditions were caused by an inflamation or immune response, not from a neurotransmitter deficiency. GLA lowers the inflamation response.

I take borage oil but my doctor wants me to take primrose oil instead. Supposedly primrose oil more efficiently metabolizes into GLA, even though it initially has a lower GLA content than borage. Either way, I suspect I should try a higher dose. My doses have been in the range of 120mg to 240 GLA per day.

I have not noticed any psychiatric effect of GLA. I do notice that when I stop taking it for a couple days, I get a return of aches and pains. So I know it is indeed doing something in the inflamation arena.
