Read about this issue, its quite fascinating.. the problem is not volume of tryptophan but competition with other amino acids... when u consume tryp with other amino acids, they compete for binding sites at the blood brain barrier (BBB)... and other amino acids win out... but when u take tryp alone, its wins without a battle... they employ this empirically using something called a tryptophan challenge, u can read all about it in the literature.. quite cool...
