In reply to SJW - hypericum; does it poop out?, posted by sdb on July 26, 2006, at 15:39:45
Its hard to say exactly.
The mechanisms for poop-out are not full understood.
One proposition is that medications with a single mechanism of action can poop out due to its propensity to disrupt other mood regulating chemicals, ie high doses of an SSRI might lower dopamine etc. In this sence SJW might not poop out since it has a broader spectrum of activity.
Ie, the TCA's too, are generally thought to poop out less than the SSRI's.
I don't know how one would say that SJW has a high propensity to poop out. There certainly havn't been controlled trials on the situation.
What some people lable as poop out, may be a relaspe of depression due to increasing life stressors or demands.
It can happen though. It which case you could augment it with something else. You could raise (or lower) the dose. Or you could take a break for a while and come back to it later.
