I take an 80% Whey Protein Concentrate from a bulk supplier in the UK. Apparently it's better to take it with carbohydrates so that Tryptophan gets a 'free ride' to the brain and doesn't have to compete with other aminos.

I'm also taking GABA Relaxer again since I went out and bought some again, not often I go to the city heh. I really must get some from iherb as you get 90 pills for the price of 30 here. Outrageous what we pay for supplements in the UK sometimes.

I think for Generalised Anxiety Whey and GABA are a good combo. I must say though that more is less with GABA relaxer it seems. If I take the recommended dose or higher I feel more anxious and breathless. I'm sure this is due to GABA as I've taken GABA on it's own before. It's known to make you more anxious if you get the dosage wrong. So some experimentation is needed. I take just one pill and not 2 as recommended and this works for me.

The combination of ingredients in GABA Relaxer is supposed to work synergistically to increase GABA levels in the brain. GABA on it's own is not supposed to break the brain/blood barrier.

I would say GABA Relaxer is subtle, it's not a full on anxiety stopping med like valium. However I find after a day or so of taking GABA Relaxer things that troubled me don't seem to bother me as much. I haven't as of yet found a decent panic attack prophylactic with the power of Valium. I do believe though that a combination of alternative supplements can help lower your susceptibility to panic and anxiety.

With regard to Tryptozen yeah it is a silly name it implies the effect is due to Tryptophan content. The milk protein hydrolysate in Tryptozen and silimar products has been studied and found to have a benzodiazepine effect. Whey Protein probably contains some of this peptide however the anxiolytic properties of Whey Protein are supposed to come from Alpha Lactalbulmin which contains Tryptophan.

This article is well worth reading about Tryptophan.

Anyone who has tried Trytophan without effect should read the quote below >

"Eating a high protein diet to provide more tryptophan only worsens the problem by even more increasing the intake of the 5 competing amino acids. Ironically, the only dietary strategy that increases brain tryptophan supply is to eat a high carbohydrate diet.

When large amounts of carbohydrates are eaten, the body secretes large amounts of the hormone insulin to lower the ensuing high blood sugar. The insulin also clears from the blood most of the 5 amino acids that compete with tryptophan for a ride to the brain. Tryptophan then has the "bus" all to itself, allowing more tryptophan to reach the brain."
