The usual first common route to dopamine is tyrosine, anywhere from 500mg a day to 3000mg a day, but no later than 3pm or else insomnia is likely.

For people who find tyrosine too stimulating or it doesn't give the desired effect, the next step is l-phenylalanine, anywhere from 500mg to 3000mg a day.

If that is too stimulating or doesn't work, the next step is dl-phenylalanine, 500mg to 3000mg a day.

If that is too stimulating or doesn't work, the next step is d-phenylalanine.

Some people find a good combination is tyrosine plus dl-phenylalanine. You can combine any two of the above.

All of these work in complicated intertwined ways, affecting norepinephrine, dopamine, and beta endorphins, converting forward and backward, varying a lot from person to person.

They work fast...if you don't feel anything within half an hour of your first 500mg dose, you can take another. If still nothing, you can take another. But for me, I could feel them in about 15 minutes, but I found they really didn't kick in until much later in the day. So mileage definitely varies a lot.

None of them worked for me...yes they did boost dopamine, but what I need is more dopamine activity, not necessarily more dopamine.

The cool thing is that you only need a few days to a week to try each one, because they work fast. And if you have any bad reactions, stop. The primary cautions to watch out for are increased blood pressure and jitteriness.

Mucuna Pruriens converts directly to dopamine. I've never tried it.

Another way is to just eat high protein meals.

Fish oil boosts dopamine. It can raise dopamine and norepinephrine by 40%. It usually has to have a combined EPA/DHA total mg of 1000mg to 2000mg a day (not the mg of the whole capsule itself).

Pycnogenol has some unknown effect on boosting norepinephrine and dopamine function, something to do with interfering with the enzymes that break them down. There are anecdotal reports where it is being used to replace ritalin for ADD.

St Johns Wort boosts dopamine by reuptake inhibition, in addition to serotonin, norepinephrine and GABA. Of everything I've mentioned here, nothing worked anywhere near as good as SJW.

It's the same old song and dance though...trial and error. What is magic for someone is worthless to someone else. These are just some ideas to work with.
