Topamax, Lamictal GABA, Taurine, Mg+ Supplements

Posted by MoparFan91 on September 1, 2005, at 13:40:04

I'm on 50mg of Topamax right now with 300mg Lamictal. I'm currently titrating to 100mg of Topamax. I'm using it as an add-on mood stabilizer to take care of Ultradian (several times a day) bipolar cycling that Lamictal is unable to care of itself.

From what I've read, Topamax agonises GABA(A) receptors. I also read that Taurine is an agonist of the GABA(A) and GABA(B) receptors as well, and it also keeps dopamine and norepinephrine in check. Taurine also has similar functions to Lamictal and Topamax in working with voltage channels.

I've been taking GABA supplements and Taurine supplements lately. I take Magnesium Taurate as well. Magnesium has similar functions to Lamictal in that they both modulate the NMDA glutamate receptors. Magnesium and Topamax are both calcium channel blockers, too.

I take all my GABA right before bedtime and Magnesium Taurate 4 times a day. The 500mg Taurine, which also take before bedtime, is bonded with GABA (along with Inositol and Niacinamide).

So, what I'm wondering is, is it a good idea to be combining GABA, Magnesium, and Taurine with Topamax and Lamictal?

Or would it not be a great idea (much like combining 5-htp with an SSRI or Tyrosine with Wellbutrin)?

Would GABA supplements, Taurine, and Magnesium actually potentiate Lamictal and Topamax since they all have similar functions, hence increasing the mood stabilizing effects overall?
