Since then I have been unable to get up in time to go to the gym (an important part of my anti-depression program) and this weekend I couldn't wake up, and kept zoning out on the couch.

I had chemo three different times for breast cancer, and it made my hair come in finer and thinner than it was, and then I went into menopause from the chemo as well, which did NOT help my poor hair.

That's very interesting that you had this reaction to a topical application. I have taken melatonin orally to help with sleep, but it worked only for a few days then the sleep effect diminished. I didn't take it long enough to observe any changes in hair growth, but I'm going to start back on a low dose oral regimen and pay more attention this time.

Perhaps you should experiment with decreasing the amount you are using by diluting the solution or using it every other night. I've heard of a few commercial products (one is Raevoderm) which contains some Melatonin along with other anti-oxidants. Or maybe mix some of your compound with another tonic which has vitamins and herbs known to support hair growth...such as Hairever II, or Jason Scalp Elixir. Best of luck, hope you keep us posted.
