Yes, fish oil should help.

> Is pure fish oil the best way to metabolize omega 3 fatty acids or would a blend of fish oil and flax seed oil be better?

You probably already get enough of the shorter-chain omega-3s in various vegetable oils in your diet. The real need is in the longer-chain omega-3s, and there is no better source than fish oil.

> Heavy metals in fish is a problem - is Alaskan deep sea fish or New Zealand fish oil worth the extra cost (can be considerable) to avoid this problem?

There are no heavy metals in fish oils. Metals segregate with the protein, which is entirely removed during the most basic of refining processes for the fish oil.

> I like grilled fresh salmon and eat it frequently, should I not take fish oil on days that I eat fish?

No reason to limit the fish oil. It won't hurt you.

I'd go with personal recommendations. For example, people have been recommending Carlson's liquid. I got some, and it's quite pleasant to use. I also find that Walmart's house brand fish oil, Spring Valley, is both fresh (not rancid) and inexpensive.
