Hiya Loops,
Really interesting feedback..thanks!

> Ginkgo - first two days at 60mg standardized extract, great, thereafter, anxious with increased appetite and unable to sit down and chill out.

I've never taken ginkgo..but just a warning..Don't take it if there is any slight remote possibility you may get pregnant.
Actually I've heard from a large no of females who have tried it and NONE seemed to find it worth taking.
I can see how it might be useful to blokes..especially if they were prone to gout.

> vinpocetine - the more I take this the more I like it. I would even go so far as to say it has helped with depression (increased neurotransmitter turnover??). It very much increases my concentration for about 2 hours after 5-10mg dosage, and makes me more chatty and sociable. It also does not interfere with sleep. I usually combine it with a good dose of taurine, which has been a regular supplement of mine along with P5P and zinc; the taurine, B6 conenzyme and the zinc seem to work together very well and ground me.

I've never tried this one..sounds just what I need though <g>.
How do you take the taurine, like by itself? with food? time of day?..is it just called taurine? I don't think either are available where I live, so I tend to only try them after I hear a lot of good reports from people taking them.
Yes, I love the zinc, P5P combo..and I sometimes add a bit of magnesium..not a lot though. I don't think its needed as much maybe if you take the zinc and P5P with it, or maybe its my diet too?

> I went off lith orotate in the end because it was making my lack of motivation worse not better, even with the small dose I was on.

From the little I've read on how lithium is supposed to work....I would expect it to make motivation worse..so that fits!

Taurine is great, but you have to fiddle with dose - I don't take it every day, but most days, especially in the morning when I feel I need it for the anti-anxiety. Also I am a vegan so I probably need more. If I am scared of a social occasion etc, I take more taurine - completely blunts the fight-or-flight response.

Sounds like its worth trying for me. I know I could order some magnesium taurate form he US..what do you take?

> Another interesting discovery for asthma sufferers - I have mild asthma exacerbated by smoking, and have found that schizandra (1g, 3x daily) has completely anihalated my need for an inhaler, and I am still smoking.

That's interesting. I still get mild asthma on occasion. I just read about this herb..sounds good. Something else I've never seen over here, but I'll keep my eyes open.

> Other stuff - dong quai if you're a woman in last two weeks of cycle with P5P - completely eliminates my PMS.

I knew P5P helped..haven't tried dong quai. I no longer get the severe bloating and migraines though since I started thyroid hormones..but I do find a difference still in that part of the cycle. Might be worth me trying. I hate black koshosh. and I love Siberian ginseng..took that one for years but haven't been able to get in past 8 years or so..at least as a ground root powder..and that is the only way I find it effective.

> B25 tablet before bed to balance the Bs.

great idea..I would have thought they would be too stimulating then?..but then you do take a combo of sleep stuff at bedtime<g>

> Include much more natural magnesium in diet in form of oats, brown rice, quinoa, lots of veggies, beans and fruit, homemade wholemeal bread etc. Since doing this I don't need to take my mag tablets anymore and my back problems seem to have gone wahey!

I have a diet a bit like that..but I just need say100mg of mag citrate in the morning and about the same at night with calcium. I have Epsom salt baths about twice a week too.

BTW what is quinoa?

> Forcing myself to MAKE CHANGES rather than just pop supplements and hope for the best. I.e., having found this or that that helps, taking the opportunity to change the things in my life that are making me depressed before the supplement stops working!. Not easy, but with me it's sooo easy to rely on a pill to make yourself feel better and just hope for the best. I always find that eventually nothing works longterm because I am still stuck with the same old behaviour patterns that got me depressed and anxious in the first place. I am extremely resistant to change as a result of big amounts of fear in my life. Pushing through this is now very important to me and is hard, so when I feel up to it, I have to just DO IT.

great idea..I need to change my behaviour patterns and thinking too<g>..err easier said than done!

And you're right, diet and supplements need to be considered as a package to work effectively.

Best, Jan
