I haven't done it myself (added folate with an SSRI), but there is good and reliable evidence that doing so both enhances the antidepressant effect, and reduces side-effects.

I think this falls into the "can't hurt, might help" category.

Women are more responsive than men, apparently. 500 mg/day seemed effective in women, but men needed twice that.
