I recently purchased a Hemi-sync meditation tape from the Monroe Institute as I had one of their tapes about 15 years ago and liked it a lot. I got that one from my therapist, which used to be the only way they were marketed. It was called "Deep Insight" an I found it very relaxing as well as yes, sometimes flashing certain insightful thoughts into my consciousness.
I'm disappointed in the one I bought recently though and suspect I need to know more about how these things work. For one thing, this one doesn't have distinct sounds like the other one had but sounds more like a wind tunnel and/or low toned hissing than anything. The first few times I tried it, it relaxed me totally (despite my mind buzzing with the usual thought commotion) and I simply fell asleep. This was ok but the next few times I tried it, it made me anxious! I was using it to get back to sleep after having to get up in the middle of the night to let my dog out, and the longer I listened to it the more apprehensive and nervous I felt, complete with a knotlike feeling in the middle of my chest. Thinking this was some kind of a fluke, I tried it again another night (again thanks to the pooch) and it was even worse -- the longer I listened, the more it felt downright torturous.
What might explain this? One thing different from when I tried the tape intially is that I've began taking MSM and glucosamine while cutting down on TMG.
I intend to talk to the folks at the Monroe Institute, but would appreciate any comments from others who have used this technology before I do so.
