Why are you so concerned about avoiding sulfate? I don't understand the chemistry with these things, so you don't need to be too technical with that answer. :)

I've been using diluted Epsom Salts as a form of magnesium, and I feel confident I am getting some magnesium.

Eby's advice was 1 rounded teaspoon equals 1 gram of magnesium. What I've been doing is making magnesium laced lemonade. 2 rounded HALF teaspoons of Epsom Salt -- that happened to be the only measuring spoon I could locate! :) -- plus 1 rounded half teaspoon of glycine, mixed with approx. 40 oz of distilled water, a full bottle of Minute Maid lemon juice plus the juice of one fresh lemon...sweetened to taste with stevia. It makes a palatable drink, especially after it sits for a while. I drink it throughout the day, just a bit at a time, maybe a half cup or so per hour or so. I have not had problems with diarrhea.

I'm wondering exactly how much magnesium I am absorbing though -- and this form of magnesium may be cheap, but the lemon juice isn't -- about $2.00/day so I probably will be cutting it out or at least down drastically.

I wonder if it's more effective if I drink it with food or without.

Perhaps I should be adding taurine, instead of glycine?

George Eby said:

"Very interestingly, taurine and glycine exist in the presence of a time- and dose-dependent exchange mechanism. After administering glycine to rats, researchers discovered that it produced a notable suppression of hepatic taurine content in the liver. Yet, this taurine decrease was not found in other taurine-rich organs such as the brain, heart or kidney. The mechanism for hepatic concentration of these two amino acids serves to alter liver concentrations of these amino acids without adversely affecting the rest of the body. The significance of this is very high, because as glycine goes up and taurine goes down in the liver, bile production is impaired and intestinal absorption of magnesium becomes greatly impaired, helping to explain why diarrhea resulting from magnesium taurate is essentially non-existant. In some people sensitive to this reaction, magnesium glycinate would be contraindicated, while magnesium taurate would be very helpful." http://www.coldcure.com/html/dep.html#taurine
