Miserable tic

Posted by amd on December 19, 2021, at 17:43:50

This is going to sound utterly insane, but here goes.

I have this incredibly annoying tic / urge when I'm reading certain books to put the pages against my face. I feel completely uncomfortable until I do so, almost like an itch you have to scratch, but worse. I had a mild version of this when I was younger but it's gotten beyond distracting. I'm not trolling here. I don't have any other kinds of tics like that, but with shiny-paged books (like color prints) and even with my iPhone the urge torturously remains until I rub my phone on my forehead or between my temples. I don't know what it is or how to stop it and it makes me miserable when it happens! What is this craziness? Is there medicine for it or a cure? What causes it, any chemical imbalance?

I know - I want to laugh at me too. But it's distressing enough that it's causing me real pain these days. Making it so I can't do one of my favorite things, which is to read. (Luckily that urge doesn't happen when I'm at a screen, where I spend most of my working time.)

Any advice or suggestions very much appreciated.
