Hi Philippa,
I've had it for over 2 years (has been growing and expanding).
Those holes are the places where it originally started. It eats down into the skin and then pours out a bunch of goopy yellow crap which (I assume) contains more spores and allows it to spread.
I really have no idea. It's nasty and nothing seems to work.
