The problem is that benzos are a treatment for GAD when antidepressants don't work. When I was hospitalized, they said that clonazepam (for instance) could be used long term for treatment resistant GAD.

It's a shame. All the wrong people are being cut off meds. Strange too how the tables are turning. In Canada here, weed is legal. Alcohol is legal. Without the benzo option, many patients will just turn back to alcohol, with arguably more long term health consequences.

The worst part of it is that (for anxiety) benzos work for basically everybody. SSRI are not that effective, and the side effects can suck.
