I've tried a bunch ( Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, Celexa, Effexor, Nefazodone,Trasodone, Doxepin, Remereon, Imipramine, Moclobemide, Parnate, and probably some I'm forgetting) and I can't say whether one was more effective at reducing REM sleep. I think if your depression is effectively treated it will happen. At least in my experience excessive REM sleep is a sign my depression is under treated.

A strong fairly long acting benzo will do it for sure. I took 60 mg of Dalmane for a while and never dreamt at all. The nice thing about a drug like Dalmane is it's got such a long half life that it's essentially self tapering so you don't have to reallly worry too much about rebound symptoms if you stop taking it. Valium would probably be the same way.

But besides benzos, low dose Seroquel is very effective for sleep and augments antidepressants. In the absence of counteracting stimulation 50-100 mg of Seroquel should put you on your *ss. As monotherapy it is actually the most sedating thing I have ever had. More than benzos, Remeron, doxepin. The only thing stronger would be a qualude or anesthesia.

I actually could not walk if I took Seroquel and was not in bed when it kicked in.
