I think Klonopin and xanax are equally potent, they're just...different. Xanax hits faster and doesn't last as long; Klonopin takes longer to work and lasts considerably longer.
My wild guess would be that using Klonopin during a tranquilizer taper would be more calming (Klonopin is used for bipolar and schizoaffective disorders for this reason) and might make things go more smoothly. I could be wrong, though.
