Seroquel and SSRI's do not work in the same way.

Often antipsychotics like Seroquel are used to augment SSRIs. The rationale is that they can reduce anxiety and promote sleep.

SSRI's increase serotonin neurotransmission in the brain. Antipsychotics have a range of effects. They can block certain serotonin receptors (known to cause SSRI side effects), but they also block dopamine receptors to some extent. This can improve (or worsen) certain forms of depression.

Seroquel also has a metabolite which acts as a norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor. This increases norepinephrine levels. It is an antihistamine (which can improve sleep and anxiety).
