Benzos are not generally recommended for people with sleep apnea. All of the benzos interfere with sleep architecture and suppress slow wave sleep (SWS) or the deep stage sleep. Slow wave sleep is the phase of sleep during which the human body and brain recovers the most.

There are some individuals with severe and chronic anxiety who might still need to take benzos despite having sleep apnea. If you have sleep apnea and have to take sedating medications periodically, many sleep medicine specialists recommend auto titrating devices such as autoPaps or autoBipaps, that automatically adjust for increased pressure needs as a result of taking a sedating medication at bedtime.
