Drug companies and the FDA and researchers do conduct regular studies of this. Most AD's are better than placebos at reducing depressive symptoms and the difference is statistically significant but not that large.
There's a psychiatrist whose name I can't remember right now who recently wrote a book called "Unhinged" which was very critical of psych meds.
