In my opinion, it would not be a good idea at all. Dependence on one drug could be replaced by dependence on another, and it might not be effective anyway.

Wean down to the lowest possible dose of Xanax that you can, and then if further reductions are difficult try replacing part (and eventually all) of the dose with a long-acting benzo, which is then reduced gradually and stopped.
