If you want detailed accounts of what it's like to undergo ECT, read Shock by Kitty Dukakis and Undercurrents by Martha Manning. Dukakis had a very positive experience with ECT ten years ago, and continues to get a maintenance treatment of ECT about once a month. Manning suffered some short-term memory loss, but ECT lifted her out of a severe, suicidal depression. But there are plenty of horror stories out there too.
