Buspar + melatonin = promising antidepressant

Posted by Hugh on April 13, 2013, at 13:50:54

This study combined 15 mg of buspirone with 3 mg of sustained-release melatonin. Alone, neither had any antidepressant-like action, but combined, they were very effective.

This single case study used 5 mg of buspirone combined with 3 mg of melatonin on a woman who had bipolar 1 and treatment-resistant depression.

I took buspirone briefly in the late '90s, and it caused suicidal ideation, so I won't be trying this combo. But I told my mother about it last year, and she tried it, I think at 5 mg of buspirone and 3 mg of SR melatonin. Her depression improved, but she stopped taking it after a few months because it made her insomnia worse. But it did help to lift her out of a pretty deep depression.
