There was previous research on this a number of years ago by Japanese researchers who came to basically the same conclusion. It's something to do with exposure to light at night that can throw off the circadian rhythm. Light exposure inhibits the production of melatonin.

To add to this, in my own experience, Facebook was a very negative experience and exacerbated anxiety and depression.

I quit Facebook completely almost 1 year ago along with all social networking. I eventually felt much, much better emotionally after ending my participation there. Too much drama in my opinion and everyone *seems* to be happier than us.
