Yes, I'm pretty sure you can have both. When I'm not experiencing a major depressive episode I'm often dysthymic. Or rather, I'll have really, really bad days and dysthymic days over a period of weeks and months.

It comes down to trials and error, figuring out what mix of life circumstances and biology is responsible then tackling them each separately. I'm doing pretty well the past few weeks on a combo of mindfulness meditation, running, and symbyax. I think it's a good med to try if you are in the bipolar spectrum.
