I think everyone naturally feels quite a lot of fear about any major surgery. I certainly do. But wouldn't you want to carefully consider a procedure which has definite promise of relieving severe chronic pain? I don't mean committing to surgery; I just mean getting an opinion about your MRI findings. I think, if you live at a distance, you can get a consultation with the Hopkins Spine center surgeons by sending your MRI and a doctor's report; you don't actually have to go there. It would be interesting to see what two different surgeons suggest; I think more than one opinion always helps a lot in educating us about our physical conditions.
