I personally haven't noticed any difference, but there are some cases in the literature where switching to a generic was bad for epileptic patients, e.g.

Don't know if there are studies focusing on the use of generic lamotrigine in mood disorders vs. Lamictal.

I think it's worth a try, just pay attention to any changes in mood and side effects. And maybe tell someone else what you're doing in case you don't pick up on any abnormalities.
