Why don't they do that anymore? I mean, what's the treatment for alcoholism these days--campral if you're lucky, antabuse if your doc hates you? Maybe an AD or seroquel to calm you down, and short-term benzos during detox (if needed) ? I mean, you look a the drug ads from back in the day, and it seems like docs had a better understanding of how complicated heavy drinking (and drug use) was. There wasn't this whole "once an alcoholic/addict, always an alcoholic/addict. NO FUN PILLS FOR YOU!' attitude that seems so prevalent these days.
I've seen ads for using amphetamines in depressed drinkers and, of course, old school benzo ads for getting people to quit drinking/drink less. And if you read the older literature, docs would sometimes give ex-amphetamine addicts dexedrine and ex-cokeheads ritalin so that at least they could control the dosage and keep the patient out of legal trouble.
Whatever happened to good ole fashion medicatin'? LOL. Then again, back then they also pumped people like me full of Thorazine, electroshocked them, put them into insulin comas, and lobotomized them. Maybe some things have improved, just a tad...
