For many people, but it's not a given. I have taken xanax for years. Zero diminishing of effectiveness, zero need for dose increase - if anything my dosages have decreased, and zero withdrawal if I don't feel the need to take it.

In the past I've been on Klonopin. I did need to wean off of that when I wanted to stop it. It took a few weeks and it really was not bad at all.

Yes, tolerance and withdrawal can happen. And for some, withdrawal can be bad. But that is not the case for everyone. Physiology varies from person to person, and experiences with drugs vary.
