Truthfully, zonked, my understanding of quitting smoking is that it is very tough. One friend had to find a 'life window' because it's can be that difficult. Which took her years :-/ but that's what it took to accomplished sanely. She also deals with med issues, so that is paramount imo. Lungs regenerate relatively quickly. You've got time.
I support you taking the long view in this. So no judgments from me.
* and whoever gazes at the stars will never again be quite alone...
