Generally, prescription sleeping pills give me insomnia and anxiety. Other meds might be sedating but definitely leave me trashed the next day.

I started taking L-Tryptophan about a month ago (pharmaceutical grade). While I have been trying it for depression, one amazing benefit has been sleep. It isn't exactly a "sleeping pill", but rather it seems to have restored my natural sleep cycle and I sleep "deeper" than I have in many years.

I've read reviews that people say it leaves them feeling muddy the next day, but that hasn't been my experience. I take 500mg at dinner time.
