This was not a high dose, either. I went through the same thing with Flexeril. So I think I am sensitive to the cardiac effects of tricyclics. The elevation in heart rate and the sensation of palpitations comes with the territory. These effects can mitigate over time. Nortriptyline is significantly less anticholinergic than amitriptyline and less noradrenergic than desipramine. The cardiac effects of nortriptyline may be the mildest among the tricyclics, although I would consider trimipramine as a potential treatment.
As an aside, a combination of Effexor and Wellbutrin is often effective when neither alone is sufficient to treat depression. Both drugs have been reported by some to help with adult ADD.

Some see things as they are and ask why.
I dream of things that never were and ask why not.
