There is only one hypnotic that doesnt supress REM sleep, that is the old tricyclic antidepressant Surmontil (trimipramine)

Unfortunatly it is long acting, so can sometimes cause hangover the following day, depending on the dose you take.

It isnt habit forming, so your doctor shouldnt be too concerned about letting you try it.
