Stay away from Benzo Island (benzoisland.org)

Posted by detroitpistons on May 24, 2010, at 16:07:50

I just wanted to give my opinion on this site to anyone who's looking for information or help on discontinuing benzodiazepines. Benzo Island is truly an island. It's closed off. Even if you just want to read the forums, you have to register, give an introduction and be approved, and then you are sort of assigned to a person who will "help" you and give you a discontinuation plan. At least they reference the Ashton Manual, which I believe to be very useful. The site is NOT, however, affiliated with Dr. Heather Ashton or www.benzo.org.uk (the "good guys").

Now, I can't vouch for how well their discontinuation advice works because I quit the site after being personally attacked. Once they have you snared in their net, they start to try to get you into the whole anti-psychiatry/ Peter Breggin mindset. Honestly, if I wasn't fairly knowledgeable about all of this, I might've believed them. Maybe I would've stopped taking meds. Maybe I would've even killed myself...I think it's a dangerous site. They will tell a schizophrenic (or at least imply) that antipsychotic medication is "bad" for them. AP meds are certainly no picnic for some people, but for other people they are life-savers. None of these drugs are perfect, but a lot of us lead much better lives because of them.

The site really made me feel uncomfortable. Honestly, I really felt that they applied a sort of "cult" psychology there. It was just really weird and a little disturbing. It's very secretive and dictatorial. It's not good. I think they are intentionally and irresponsibly toying with people's mental health because of their own unfounded beliefs. What's worse, it's all based on pseudoscience.
