Yes. However, once developed, these disorders become biologically self-perpetuating, and actually worsen with time. Unfortunately, they also become less amenable to psychotherapy. I think one needs to look at the full picture as best as it can be painted, and not become too invested in a monolithic view of how these disorders evolve and progress. All-or-nothing thinking does not seem to work well when approaching mental illness.

How might we explain the ability of some drugs to precipitate depression or psychosis in an individual whom had never been mentally ill previously? How might we explain the cyclic depression that occurs with some woman premenstrually? How about the depression that can occur as a result of hypothyroid and other abnormal hormonal states? These conditions are quite obviously biological, and can occur in people with well-adjusted and functional psyches.
