Botox for depression?

Posted by rovers95 on November 23, 2009, at 12:27:18

Just enquiring as to whether anyone on the board has used (or knows anyone who has used) botox for depression? How effectively and quickly does it work?

From what i read and saw on video, one of the people involved in the study says it ridded her of the treatment resistant depression she'd had for many years but also suggested she never felt really low during this period, therefore perhaps the people in this study were only mildly depressed and as such the treatment is not as effective for people with depression that is more severe...i hope to be proved wrong here!

On the other hand, studies show that many people with depression and anxiety have inbalances in the cholinergic system. Perhaps individuals with increased acetylcholine/cholinergic sensitivity could be more prone to frowning and the increase in frowning feeds back to the brain worsening depression? Botox blocks the effects of acteylcholine at the synapse...reducing frowning if injected into the brow area, perhaps preventing this negative feedback?

Finally, has anyone suffering from anxiety benefited from botox as the case study proposes that patients reported decreases in anxiety and irribality as well as depression?
