Nardil Narcolepsy/Daytime Sleepiness/Somnolence

Posted by pedr on September 2, 2009, at 16:13:23

Hi gang,
I started Nardil 15mg on 7/21 and (approximately) increased in 15mg steps to 60mg every week. I reached 60mg 2.5 weeks ago. Up until now I didn't get any strong side-effects, just intermittent trouble sleeping and so I switched from taking the 4 pills in the a.m. to 2 in the a.m. and 2 at night.

Anyway, the last week or so the side-effects have increased. I wake every 15-30 minutes and am often wide-awake at 4-6 a.m., even though I'm exhausted. Additionally I appear to have become narcoleptic! I cannot stop falling asleep very quickly at work. One minute I'm pondering how to solve a problem and the next I'm asleep and falling face-first towards my keyboard... I don't even see it coming.

Is it usual for side-effects to actually intensify like this? Most people's experiences that I have read on this site and others are that the sleepiness diminishes with time. But mine seems to be increasing. Is it just the increase to 60mg catching up with me?

I am going to switch back to taking all 4 pills in the a.m. If that doesn't work then I will have to see the doc. I would say that Provigil should be out of the window since it's contraindicated with MAOI's but others think/act otherwise: http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/20070502/msgs/755486.html

Also, for sleeping at night, I have some trazodone but since that's an anti depressant, I don't really want what I'm taking to have an effect on the Nardil e.g. potentiate it. Any good suggestions for someone on Nardil?

Cheers,
Pete
