Phillipa,
I don't like them but they have always worked for me. Actually amitriptyline would probably work better but it has stronger side effects. My current pdoc claims that there tends to be less poop out with the tricyclics. But I think for me a mood stabilizer will be the ultimate solution - I just need something to break out of the abyss I'm in now.
Last year when hospitalized it was a combination of valium, seroquel (which I hate the most), Nortriptyline, and abilify (which I probably hate as much as seroquel).

I don't want to appear negative to others that may be reading this post that are taking those drugs but I am very fearful of the neuroleptics which is why I am having a hard time trying to decide whether I should up the dosage on the seroquel or add the trazodone.

I will be seeing another doctor at the end of the month to get another opinion.

I guess I am looking for a perfect solution and there isn't one. Most of these drugs interfere with sleep architecture so you are sleeping but you may not be getting the right amount of rem sleep or deep stage sleep that you would be w/o them.

This is why I have never stayed on the drugs once I felt better and unlike others I usually would not have a relapse when tapering off, but this year hasn't worked out that way.

Sorry long answer and didn't address your question. There is always a lot of anxiety and SSRIs tend to be stimulating so because there is the high anxiety aspect I have never given them a fair chance.

I have read that Zoloft and Nortriptyline work well together and if I were sleeping but depressed I would have suggested that to my pdoc.

I get a little disturbed when he tells me you've read more about this than I have - I'm talking to patients all day long. Doesn't inspire confidence.
