I wouldnt really call it a 'sedative' either. The drug works on your melatonin receptors (the system that makes you feel sleepy at night when its dark) so once you take it you feel natually sleepy and wake up feeling rested. Theres no grogginess that you get with sleeping aids and tranqs.
In the day time you feel fully alert with no concentration or memory problems. The antidepressant effect isnt as powerful as SSRI's (if youre a responder) so you dont feel overly happy or stimulated. But you do feel more normal and more in control of your emotions. There is also no emotional numbing like with SSRIs and your sex life is left intact.
I think in the long run its better to feel normal rather than overly happy, will result in a more balanced life. I'd say its entirely abnormal to never feel sad or down, that shouldnt be our goal.
Agomelatine definetly gets the thumbs up from me.
