I almost hate to say something so simplistic, but a chronic decrease in available serotonin might force these 5-HT1a somatodendritic autoreceptors to become upregulated. I don't know. I don't know enough about the dynamics of this receptor to be certain. However, if this is true, then you have a positive feedback loop that allows the severity of symptoms to worsen over time.
