Pristiq is the active metabolite of Effexor so presumably it will carry with it less side effects like the citalopram/escitalopram situation. And supposedly it's metabolized differently making it more effective.

They're both SNRI's so I would think you could switch directly. Cymbalta is supposedly more agonistic with norepinephrine, and I found Cymbalta more activating/powerful than Effexor, but that's just me.
