Parnate vs. Nardil

Posted by maco11 on May 1, 2008, at 21:48:37

I am new to this forum but not very new to depression.

I started taking Parnate about 15 years ago after being on several different meds, both tric and SSRI's and a multitude of combinations through my late teens and into my early 20's. I was giving up-I lost all will to go on. Couldn't eben get out of bed and God forbid hold down a job.

In a last desparate attempt to 'live', I switched psych's and was given Parnate after he diagnosed me with Atypical Depression. Parnate saved my life back then and could care less about side affects or special diets. I mean, depression was the absolute worse side affect of life anyone could have, so watching what I ate was not a problem- because I had my life back.

Anyway, I spent years on Parnate but seemed in some weird way to build up a tolerence to my dosage. I felt that I had to increase the amount to achieve the same affect. Went up to 100mg a day- Eventually, some side affects did catch up to me, so I went on to numerous combo's of Zoloft w/ Adderall and Klono (can't spell half of these meds)..so now, my new pdoc wants to put me on Nardil.

I've researched this MAOI but seemed to be a little confused as to the real difference between the Parnate I used to take and Nardil. They are both MAOI's, one MAOI-A and one B.

Could someone share the overall difference or how they felt when taking Nardil, then at some later time, Parnate (or vice versa)or maybe was the effect the same or similar
