Hi Lebrada,
Please don't mistake the initial euphoria from Nardil as the true antidepressant effect. I too had hypomania when first starting on the medication many years ago. I had been depressed for so long that this feeling was wonderful. But it soon went away. I wish I could recover it when I wanted, but I haven't been able to. That aside, the Nardil is the only medication that works for my treatment resistant atypical depression and social phobia. The loss of the euphoria is not poop out.

> Q: How do I stop it from happening - ie. keep it to continue to work/ongoing?

As the euphoria is not the true antidepressant effect of Nardil, I don't believe you can keep it going.

> Q:how does PARNATE compare (keeps working as opposed to Nardil)?

Even though they are both MAOIs, Parnate and Nardil are completely different medications. Parnate causes less weight gain but does not work as well on social anxiety. This is, I believe, because of the effect on GABA of Nardil. I had to double my clonazepam from 1mg to 2mg during my trial of Parnate. Clonazepam also affects GABA. Parnate is also more likely to cause hypertensive problems. If you were able to eat high doses of tyramine while on Nardil, don't try it on Parnate. I had to quit my Parnate trial because of a rare spontaneous hypertensive episode. I didn't eat anything or take any meds and I had a huge rise in blood pressure and a splitting headache. Back to Nardil.

> Q: Could you try alternating the PARNATE & NARDIL every so often??

I don't know how this would work.

> Q: What can/do u augment NARDIL with?

I augment with clonazepam for social anxiety. Seroquel and diphenhydramine(Benadryl) for sleep. I'm still looking for an answer to the carb cravings and weight gain. Possible solutions would be Topamax(stupidmax), modafinil(Provigil), Concerta, Ritalin-SR.

> Q: Does Modafinal/Provigil help with very poor memory and concentration skills that don't alleviate with even NARDIL?

Haven't tried it yet.

> Q: Can NARDIL be combined with any Anti-AKATHISIA medications?

Why? Does Nardil give you akathisia? The only med that ever gave me akathisia was abilify, an atypical antipsychotic.

> P.S. I haven't had to follow any dietry restrictions whatsoever with NARDIL - maybe due to the new formula - which is also 'I believe' the reason why after a few months it looses its effectiveness.

Be very careful with this. If you eat a large amount of aged cheese, with loads of tyramine, you may be making a trip to the ER. I believe that everyone on a MAOI should have a home blood pressure monitor. I have an inexpensive one made by Omron. If I ever get a headache, I always measure my BP. In ten years on Nardil I have had two trips to the ER. One was a tyramine reaction. The other was when a pharmacist in Canada gave me some codeine cough syrup. I didn't have my reading glasses and could not read the fine print; "contains pseudoephedrine". The pharmacist assured me it would be fine with Nardil. But in Canada, they are used to the reversible MAOIs like Moclobemide. I know the codeine by itself is fine, but pseudoephedrine is like asking for a trip to the ER.

Be careful,
Jedi
