A neurologist told me that if you have Hashimoto's , Lyme's disease or are hypothyroid, then you do NOT have CFS. Your symptoms are from those diseases.

But, I see both CFS and FMS as multi-etiology syndromes. So many diagnoses have fatigue that is chronic or pain as symptoms, that you need to rule out many to see if you're left with true Chronic FAtigue Syndrome or Fibromyalgia. I'd even venture to surmise that if an SSRI helps someone, then you might be seeing symptoms caused by anxiety, depression or whatever. I've had specialists tell me that there is a core of patients, however, who are not helped by many of the so-called FMS/CFS meds and these might be those that truly have these syndromes. Perhaps FMS/CFS meds that are partially effective are working on anxiety/depression symptoms that accompany FMS/CFS.

My fatigue and symptoms seem like either hypothyroidism or adrenal fatigue. Lab tests say otherwise. But there are receptor issues and hypothalmus issues "upstream" that may result in an attenuated thyroid or adrenal effect. CRH augmentation is being looked at for CFS and maybe even FMS.

One day I believe they will be able to subtype these syndromes or there may turn out to be more than one syndrome at play.

In the meantime, I can't tolerate Provigil, psychostimulants, or any med that is stimulating or has an SSRI effect. That eliminates most CFS/FMS meds.

I'll be seeing a CFS/FMS specialist in October. I hope he can bring something new to the table, and I believe he may. He looks at cytokine levels, tilt table testing, heart rate variability, etc., which most community doctors do not. I hope that I can post some good news after my appointment.

In the meantime, hang in there and RELAX.
