Phillipa, isn't that true of all medications that their interactions with many other meds can be a problem but in most cases this is not the case. Perhaps there are more with Synthyroid (calcium, Valium) but I know with most of the meds I take there is another list of medications that have the potential for an interaction. But there are so many that you have to weigh the advantage of taking the med versus not taking it, therefore the safest guide is to take as few as necessary, at the lowest dosage, to minimize side effects or drug interactions.

I know Celexa if often given to the elderly because it has a low potential for interactions with many other medications so many elderly are on more than 5 meds. At least that's what I was told, but like anything else, the literature needs to be searched to prove or dissprove the incidence of interactions with other meds and the frequency of this occurring.

Many meds intereact with blood thinning medications and that would be followed with tests to make sure the level of anticogulation stays constant.
