It's believed that Nardil competes for the pyridoxine transporter. Pyridoxine is required for the synthesis of all the major neurotransmitters, as it is an essential cofactor for the aromatic decarboxylase enzyme that is in each pathway. Thus, Nardil can actually create a deficiency of the very neurotransmitters it is taken to enhance. Anyone experiencing difficulty in tolerating Nardil should trial B6 supps (50 mg/day) before abandoning this therapy. Borderline B6 status, or genetic vulnerability in pyridoxal-dependent pathways, increase adverse effects.
