They need a new market--not only do people now realize the antidepressants suck, drug makers have stopped pushing them out. So, now , its time for everyone to be bipolar. When Prozac was first discovered, the plan was to market it as an **anxiolytic**--it was supposed to be like Valium, only energizing and clean in terms of cognition. Then, in the late 70s/early 80s, benzo-phobia hit, and it was reconceptualized as an antidepressant, which meant people who before had had "anxiety" now had "depression," and needed Prozac (although they might also STILL need one of those evil benzos--luckily, the 80s also brought us xanax).
So now, I think this "soft bipolar" stuff is just going to enhance markets. Doing OK on Zoloft? Think again--try Seroquel. Plus, since polypharmacy is the rule in bipolar, everyone can make $$$. Bipolar? Attention difficulties? Well, for you there's lamictal, plus adderall...mood and ADHD meds keeping you up? Good news--there's seroquel, for sedation and anxiety. Neuroleptics giving you akathisia? Try dissolving Klonopin and/or Xanax--maybe for a couple weeks, maybe forever.
