I have taken all three.
Nardil worked very well for about 2 years (late 80's), then pooped, haven't retried but want to try again. Was on 15 mg 2x/day.
Parnate didn't help me at all but at the time I was being given several other meds with it, including Lithium, Cytomel and Ritalin, so hard to say if it would have worked alone. Only got to 40 mg but had alot of headaches and suicidal thinking.
I'm on Emsam 9 mg now with some improvement in mood but not feeling like I did on Nardil ,which I remember as "normal".
Marplan also worked for me until Roche decided it wasn't making any money (1994), so that led to a bad relapse and just this past year I retried Marplan, as I heard it was available again. It did nothing but I was on Lamictal when I started it so it was not a clean trial.
I do feel MAO's have been the only AD's that do something "special" when they work. But my current response to Emsam is not the same as Nardil and Marplan. They made me forget I was even depressed because I actually lived a relatively normal life with little change in my meds and with infrequent pdoc visits. Quite a change from the way I have been the last few years.
I think I should try Nardil again to see if I can recapture some of that old feeling again. I would like a few years or more of normalcy, it's been a long time! SG
